Important Blog Changes

No, I’m not killing this blog, even though it deserves a couple of punches on the face, but I digress. Going forward all technical blog entries are going to be posted on my www.rubysecurity.org web site. I’m still planing on using abaltazar.org as my secondary blog, on which I’ll be posting stuff about Arsenal Football Club, technology in general (non-technical) and about other important shit that matters.

Roku 2 XD

Mainly because of the price tag of $79.99 and the overall positive reviews, I decided to buy a Roku 2 XD at my local Best Buy store. My first impression was of how amazingly small the new Roku 2 XD device is. With a new Rosewill HDMI cable that I purchased from Newegg, I was eager to see how the 1080p Roku video content looked on my Vizio TV.

In terms of the video quality, I compared the built-in Netflix app on the Roku with the Netflix internet app that runs natively on my Vizio TV, and the Netflix internet TV app on the Vizio had a better picture quality. This was also the same with the Revision 3 HD video content on both sources. However, the Roku interface has a far better and less counter intuitive user interface, than the Vizio internet TV control interface. Roku did an awesome job on the UI design, as I didn’t had a problem using the interface and everything is really straight forward.

I have to say that I am slightly disappointed with the Roku device, though it’s not necessarily the device’s fault. This is given that I hardly watch any TV at all. While the Roku platform has hands down the most content available than any other set top box of its kind, after the first few days, I hardly use the device because all of my IPTV content that I watch is available via the Vizio internet TV apps.

The Roku device is perfect for anyone that doesn’t have cable/satellite service or for anyone that doesn’t own an internet ready TV. There are lots of free channels, including movie channels. If only the Premier League had a subscription service that would stream all games live in HD on the Roku, then I would definitely see the Roku as the greatest thing since slice bread.

New TV

As if drinking plenty of alcohol is not enough to kill my brain cells, I’ve decided to buy a television. My main motivation on buying a television is to watch most of the English Premier League football games. I’m not an expert on current television specifications, but based on my research prior to buying the television, the Vizio 32-Inch Full HD 1080p LED/LCD HDTV under $500 was the bang for a buck for any 32-inch model. Another thing that also made me buy this television is because it has built-in wifi and access to Vizio’s Internet applications. The quality of the Netflix streaming content using the internet app is absolutely awesome. Overall, I’m happy with TV so far and would definitely suggest it to anyone that’s in the market for one.

Alex Jones on the Drug War

“The Mexican government is a narco-terrorist criminal state that abuses and dominates its own people..”
- Alex Jones

While I’m fan of Alex Jones, he can finally say something completely true without sounding like a total wack job. He hits the nail on the head in all aspects of unmasking the Mexican government, militarizing the border, and decriminalizing drugs.

Why Oracle is a bigger threat to Free Software than Apple and Microsoft

Kplice is a really cool technology that let you update a Linux system without having to restart the machine, which in a server environment this is absolutely critical since this will eliminate or minimize server downtime. Even though the software is GPL licensed. I was shocked to hear that Oracle had purchased the company behind Kplice and are now dropping Kplice support for all non Oracle Linux systems. This is absolutely incredible given that Oracle Linux is essentially a fork of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Oracle is not even making the effort to continue supporting Ksplice on other Linux systems. In my eyes, this is far more worse than bitting the hand that feeds you. In terms of tech companies, as far as I know, I haven’t heard of any other multibillion corporation that literately stoled the product of another company, claim that their product is superior, and make completely anti competitive decisions.

This is why the beauty of the the GNU Public License flourishes over any other software license, at least now we in the free/open source software community can foresee a fork of Ksplice in the near future.

Boycotting GoDaddy – Moving to different registrar

In an effort to stop giving my hard earn money to an endangered species animal killer like GoDaddy’s founder and CEO, Bob Parson, I’ve decided to move most of my domains to a different registrar.

The only thing that attracted me to GoDaddy in the first place was because of their competive hosting and domain prices in addition of being a sponsored of The Linux Action show, which is one of my favorite podcasts (even though Bryan acts like a cunt at times). As for my new registrar, lucky I’ve had good experience using NameCheap for really really really really cheap SSL certificates; Since they also do offer really cheap domain registration, I’m glad to say that NameCheap is my new registrar for most of my domains and hopefully in the near future they’ll be my registrar for all of my domains and hosting provider for this blog.

This is a small example that I hope many people will follow.
